Luscomb Isbell Artist 5 String Banjo - $950
A very rare example of the Luscomb Isbell Artist 5 string banjo. This banjo is exactly as I bought it and a project I am not going to get to as my better half thinks I should thin the herd. It has a lot of potential for the right person.
The wooden rim is 12" diameter with all lovely original 30 hooks and nuts and shoes and Talon tailpiece. There is nice wood marquetry on the outside of the rim, which is completely intact. The calfskin head is tight and has a wonderful patina. The neck is 17" from nut to rim with scale length of 26.5". This is two inches shorter than most full size banjo necks of the period, making it comparable to a ladies banjo with a 10 inch rim, as the American Princess. This puts the bridge further back and requires the larger rim. There is laminates under the heavy ebony fingerboard, headstock overlay, and the heel cap. There are no cracks or repairs on the neck or heel. The neck is relatively narrow but very comfortable. The dowel stick is attached not to the rim but to a adjustable angle fitting. This is the original design on these banjos.
The neck is either fine mahogany or walnut and french polished and has not been refinished. There are missing inlays as shown in the photos on the fingerboard and on the headstock. The inlays present are very colorful.
Four of the tuner buttons are solid pearl. The bone nut and pip are in good order.
I will be enclosing this banjo in an original Gibson banjo case that has seen wear, as photographed.
What this banjo will need for restoration:
- replace pearl inlays
- make ebony neck brace wedges
- replace missing pearl button or replace tuners
- clean and oil and polish
- set up with Nylon stringsA great project for the right person!
I am open to offers. Thanks for looking!
