An extremeley Rare Alfred Anderson(attributed to) 5 String Banjo c.1890's In 1893 Alfred Anderson, of Chelsea, Massachusetts, invented a design for adjusting the neck angles of banjos with this device that he patented. I have not seen another one like this. The rim and neck are custom made for this adjuster and I have therefore assumed that the maker of the banjo and adjuster are one and the same. The twelve inch rim is also very unusual, with a internal chamber, in addition to the double spun construction. I believe the internal resonator assembly is turned from one piece as is the spinning of the rest of the rim. The head is a plastic Remo that has been antiqued to improve appearance for this 120+ year old banjo, but also making it a very playable instrument. The straight nineteen inch neck is made of curly/birds eye maple and has very lovely green and pink pearl inlays. The tuners work well and are vintage. The nut and pip are bone. The scale lenth is 26.75 inches. While restoring this banjo, I had to fill a penny size hole in the peghead that held a label of sorts. After researching this maker, I fashioned a button that perhaps was similar to what might have been there originally. All hardware is vintage and mostly original. The tailpiece is a later addition and also is adjustable in two directions. I have it set up with mostly Nylguts, with a Vega steel 4th string and a Nylgut second for the 5th string and with a custom made bridge maple and ebony bridge. This banjo plays great as you can adjust the action anywhere you want by turning the set screws. This is a real piece of history that is being offered for the first time for sale! The inside would be perfect thin 10" pizza tray and the back side is just right for a deep dish pizza! I will be open for offers for this very collectable banjo.
