 Baycu Pony Banjo #2513-$1700 w/HSC
This is a very solid pony size 5 string banjo with a Renaissance plastic head and geared tuners with ivoroid buttons. These are the size of a mandolin and fit nicely in a mandolin case.
I build these little jos using original vintage banjos, which were mostly built prior to 1930. Most of my little banjos have slightly heavier necks and wider fingerboards for modern hands.
This banjo is from a Slingerland model 24 eight inch banjo uke built in the 1920's. The neck and dowel stick I have carved from local curly maple. The fingerboard is high quality ebony with pearl dots. The scale length is 17.25" and the neck length is 12"(nut to rim). Overall length is around 25".
The tailpiece is the original Slingerland model, as is the rest of the heavy hardware on the rim. These Slingerlands have a steel tone ring which gives it a big sound and great for clawhammer style.
I use extra slim frets, which are very close to what was used on many vintage banjos. These are made of stainless steel rather than nickel silver and wont develop grooves or wear out like the vintage frets. Also I find they intonate better.
Renaissance heads are somewhat transparent so I put a postcard behind the head held in by the foam mute for fun. It didn't seem to affect the sound greatly and it will be included with the banjo for a conversation piece.
